Haridwar – “Ganges’ wave of religion and spirituality”

Haridwar is a religious city in the state of Uttarakhand. Being popular as one of the most famous pilgrimage place in India, Haridwar features as most preferred place for vacations. Haridwar is known for its rich cultural heritage and the famous river The Ganga. Haridwar-located in the river banks of The Ganga is amongst one of the seven holy places of India. Haridwar is located at a distance of 208 km from Delhi, 192 km from Chandigarh, 54 km from Dehradun and 26 km from Rishikesh. It is known as Mokshadwar where Amrit fell during Samundra Manthan as per Hindu text books.

Har ki Pauri in Haridwar is renowned for night aarti of The Ganga which is performed with great devotion. Devotees from all across India and even from other countries across the globe come to Haridwar to enjoy serenity and tranquillity. People come here to take bath on the ghats of The Ganga river. City is filled with joy and celebrations during annual Kanwar Mela.

Scenic beauty of hilltop temples of Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi can be enjoyed by cable cars. Apart from this there is Daksheshwara Mahadev temple and Maya Devi temple. One can enjoy jungle safaris to see wildlife in Rajaji National Park located in the Shivalik hills.

Haridwar is the gateway to the four pilgrimages of Uttarakhand. It’s also your starting point on the journey to the sacred sources of the rivers Ganga and the Yamuna. According to legend, Prince Bhagirath performed penance here to salvage the souls of his ancestors who had perished due to sage Kapil’s curse. The penance was answered and the river.

Ganga trickled forth from Lord Shiva’s locks and its bountiful water revived the sons of King Sagara. In the tradition of Bhagirath, devout Hindus stand in the sacred waters here, praying for salvation of their ancestors.

Haridwar means Dwar of Hari, Hari means God and Dwar means Gateway.
