In violation of laws to keep the Ganga clean, Uttrarkashi civic body was found disposing garbage in the dumping done near forest area. The Tekhka stream flowing along side the pile of garbage is dumping the waste into the Ganga. On Monday, Additional Commissioner Harak Singh Rawat of Garhwal division has found this scenario during a surprise visit. Rawat has instructed the officials to identify any other place for waste disposal.

Rawat said, “even though being a part of eco-sensitive zone, municipality has failed to locate better place for dump disposal. If land is hard to find then proper measures such as segregation, treatment and effective waste management system must be implemented. Moreover, if the officials failed to take corrective measures then they will not be spared.

It can be clearly seen that the lack of facilities is directly polluting the Ganga. In spite of the fact that many activists have come forward to keep the Ganga clean however, without stringent laws and suitable places for dump disposal the problem will not be resolved. Uttarkashi is highly sensitive zone & 80% of its part is covered by the forests, so modern methods must be adopted for waste management.

Municipal administrator and sub-divisional magistrate of Bhatwari, Devendera Singh Negi, has suggested some modern techniques which they are planning to adopt in near future. As per him, tenders will be floated for compact machine installation and segregation unit. This will help in segregation of waste and prepare manure from it. He said they have plans to plant flowers around the units to keep the city beautiful.
